Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
I have photographed thousands of works, for more than 500 artists, individuals, colleges, museums, churches and corporations, over the past 35 years.
What is your primary product or service?
Scans and photography of 2D and 3D art, archival prints on stretched canvas and art papers, custom framing, digital restoration, design and publication of art books and catalogs, family histories.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
I started out as a fine art photographer, and have always enjoyed helping my artist friends by photographing their art for art school applications, grants and portfolios. After college and photography school, I worked as a freelance photography assistant for dozens of Boston commercial photographers. Freelance work gave me time to build my own client base till it was possible to start my own studio. I use the highly technical skills required for complex commercial shoots when photographing art. I've always printed my own work, so printing and framing was a natural fit.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
I have photographed art for my entire career, and I know how passionate artists are about their work. I know that anything I deliver has to meet their high standards. I feel I know those standards well after all these years, and I am passionate about meeting and exceeding their expectations. My focus on excellence my entire career may be one of the reasons I get frequent referrals from my clients and the Boston MFA.
My reproductions of original art often have a must-touch realism. This is possible due to the enormous capture files I create using special techniques, and custom lighting which highlights surface details. All clients are also asked to review and approve color proofs before final print are made.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
I currently have one location with two studios and a gallery.

Helpful note: My studio is located at 99 Washington Street. This is a block long, two story building. The only way to get up to the second floor is via a door and stairway on the right side of the building. There is no access to the front of the building from the front. The right side of the building has plenty of free parking. My old business name Artopia Art Imaging is on the sign. Take the stair to the second floor. My studio is the third door on the right.
